Gremi is the remains of a 16th-century royal fortress town in Kvareli municipality. Between 1466 and 1672 Gremi was the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti and an important trading centre on the Silk Road.

The citadel contains the Church of the Archangels (1565, built under King Levan) with surviving frescoes. The town was destroyed by the campaigns of Shah Abbas I in 1615, but the citadel and church still rise impressively above the Alazani Valley.
