Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town on the left bank of the Mtkvari River, about 10 kilometres east of Gori. It is one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia: its history begins in the first millennium BC, and in antiquity it served as an important trading and religious centre.

The complex preserves pagan-era rock-cut halls, a theatre-like chamber, wine cellars with qvevri and a 9th–10th-century Christian basilica. Uplistsikhe is a living monument of the Silk Road era.
